The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the first usable and mainstream foldable phone for most people.

Improvements to the hinge, folding mechanism and display means the Fold 3 is a phone ideal for everyday use. Designed for multitasking, the Fold 3 is a great choice for those with extensive workloads, with the ability to run multiple windowed apps on the large 7.6 inch foldable display.

Display

After years of interactions, Samsung have finally mastered the folding mechanism with the new Galaxy Z Fold 3.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 has two displays.

There’s a traditional display on the cover of the phone, which features a 6.2 inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with a standard 25:9 aspect ratio. The cover display is not intended to be the main display, however that doesn’t mean Samsung have cut corners. It has a very high 120Hz refresh rate and super sharp resolution at 832 x 2268 pixels. In fact, the display is better than offerings from most flagship phones.

The main display is the highlight of the Fold 3, which is a huge 7.6 inch folding screen. Samsung have made significant improvements to the hinge, with a far more flexible and smooth mechanism. In addition, the seam down the middle is less prominent, however it’s still visible.

The 7.6 inch foldable display has the latest Dynamic AMOLED 2X technology, with an ultrasmooth 120Hz refresh rate.

Performance

Despite requiring power for two screens, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is an incredibly speedy device, thanks to the high-end Snapdragon 888 5G chip from Qualcomm.

The Fold 3 can easily run multiple windowed apps at the same time, with performance similar to that of other flagship phones.

Furthermore, with 12GB RAM, the Fold 3 has more memory than even the most expensive laptops on the market, with multitasking performance that can keep up with extensive workloads.

Camera

Despite the various form factors, there’s always an accessible camera thanks to the set of 3 cameras placed throughout the phone.

The main camera on the rear cover features a triple 12 MP shooter, featuring wide, ultrawide and telephoto lenses. The camera isn’t quite as good as other flagship phones from Samsung like the Galaxy S22, however it still does a good job at taking professional looking photos.

On the cover screen, there’s an under display 4 MP selfie camera. Although not the best quality, the cover selfie camera does an adequate job for video calling in most situations.

The selfie camera for the folding screen is placed via a small notch at the upper right corner, featuring a 10 MP camera which can record 4K video at 30fps.

Operating System

The Fold 3 originally shipped with Android 11, and is upgradeable to Android 12, featuring Samsung One UI 4.1.

Samsung have promised three major updates for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, meaning the last major version of Android the phone will receive is Android 14.

Design

With its folding mechanism, the Fold 3 has a very standout and unique design.

The much improved hinge is far more sturdy than its predecessor, which was known for being very fragile.

The Fold 3 can be used in a number of form factors, including an upright standing position when partially unfolded.

Battery life

The Fold 3 has a large 4400 mAh battery, with 25W fast charging, 11W wireless charging and 4.5W reverse wireless charging.

According to Tom's Hardware, you can expect 6 to 7 hours of battery life with continuous web browsing, which is a respectable amount, especially considering the power required for the large folding screen and additional cover screen.

Samsung do not include a charger in the box, so you’ll need to use an existing USB-C charger or purchase a separate charger.
