The Samsung Galaxy S22 is a welcome improvement over its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S21. Samsung have been able to squeeze in better specs and the latest chips, and has yet still managed to shrink the size of the Samsung Galaxy S22 by 8%. We believe the flagship phone from Samsung is currently the best Android phone on the market.
With 5G connectivity, you can download and stream all the latest films and TV shows without any stuttering or buffering.
Unfortunately, there’s no charger in the box, however any USB C cable should work just fine. There’s fast charging support up to 35W and Qi/PMA wireless charging up to 15W.
Display
The standout feature of the Samsung Galaxy S22 is its gorgeous display. The almost bezel-less front is covered by a large 6.1 inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel, with an incredible 120Hz super-smooth refresh rate. Resolution stands at 1080 x 2340 pixels witn an impressive 426 pixels per pinch, for that added extra sharpness.
The Samsung Galaxy S22 series are the first phones to use the latest Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ technology, for extra protection against accidental damage.
Performance
The Galaxy S line is well known for its top of line performance, and the Samsung Galaxy S22 is certainly no different. With the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip, the flagship phone is one of the first to feature Qualcomm’s latest processor. Performance leaps have been made over the previous Snapdragon 888, making the Samsung Galaxy S22 one of the fastest Android phones you can buy today.
Storage variants include 128GB and 256GB models, both of which have 8GB RAM. The large amount of memory is suitable for intensive multitasking workloads.
Camera
On the rear, there are a total of three cameras, including a 50MP wide camera, 10MP telephoto camera and 12MP ultrawide camera. Samsung claim to have not only made hardware improvements to the cameras, but also made significant leaps in its AI image processing algorithms. This should prove particularly effective in low light shots and with the latest 8K video recording capabilities. The Samsung Galaxy S21 was already a fantastic camera, and yet Samsung have still managed to make additional improvements, resulting in a phone that can go head to head with the likes of the Apple iPhone 13 and Google Pixel 6.
The front features a 10MP selfie camera with dual pixel technology.
Operating System
The Samsung Galaxy S22 ships with the latest Android 12. Samsung have recently promised that all their flagship phones will receive a minimum of 4 major Android updates, followed by an additional year of security updates. This should significantly extend the longevity of the S22, meaning the final version the phone will receive is Android 16 (presumably in 2025).
Design
The design of the Samsung Galaxy S22 improves upon the characteristics of the Samsung Galaxy S21, for a more refined and polished look.
There's a new glass back, which replaces the previous plastic panel. The metallic finish gives off a pleasant, reflective look, which appears and feels like a premium device when compared to a painted plastic surface.
The Samsung Galaxy S22 is a compact device when compared to phones of similar screen sizes. Samsung have managed to shrink the size by 8%, compared to last year's edition.
Battery life
Samsung have shrunk the battery from 4000mAh to 3700mAh. Unfortunately, this decision has impacted the battery life of the Samsung Galaxy S22. Average daily usage can just about manage 5 hours of screen on time and 9 hours of stand by time. In addition to a smaller battery, the more power hungry processor doesn't help. If you're looking for a phone with all day battery life, we suggest you look elsewhere.
