Apple iPhone 14 may completely remove the camera bump

The upcoming Apple iPhone 14 is reported to remove the camera bump altogether - the first in the series since the iPhone 5s, 9 years ago in 2015.

Recent trends have not only increased the camera bump for each generation, but it has also been incorporated as part of the design language, in particular the Samsung Galaxy S22 series - arguably the iPhone 13’s biggest competitor.

While Samsung have proven it’s possible to make a camera bump that blends in with the design of a phone, we’re sure most consumers would actually prefer a phone without a camera bump at all.

It seems Apple agrees, and have already drawn up plans to completely remove the camera bump, but at the expense of a thicker phone.

However, there are some contradictory reports. On one hand, a report suggests all models will remove the camera bump, whereas another implies only the Apple iPhone 14 Pro and Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max will remove the camera bump.

Given the regular and Pro models are generally identical in thickness, it doesn’t make sense as to why only the Pro models will remove the camera bump. Perhaps it’s Apple's way of simply squeezing more money from the iPhone line, but this seems like an unlikely scenario.

To add to the confusion, another report suggests the camera bump will still exist for all models, except it won’t protrude as much.

Furthermore, the Apple iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max is reportedly dropping the notch in favour of two cutouts - a circle cutout for the selfie camera, and a pill cutout for for Face ID and ambient sensors. It looks like the notch will remain for the regular iPhone 14 models, albeit smaller.

The Apple iPhone 14 is still a while from launch, and is expected to be released in September 2022. The Apple iPhone 14 Pro recently entered a trial production, implying the design is more or less finalised. However, given the uncertain supply chain market, Apple’s hand may be forced to change the design at any given moment, despite the Cupertino giant having a near monopoly on the supply chain priority.
