Apple iPhone 13 is 30% faster than the Samsung Galaxy S22, according to the latest benchmarks

Despite being released just under 6 months ago, the Apple iPhone 13 still manages to beat the newly released Samsung Galaxy S22 when it comes to raw performance.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 is the first major smartphone to be equipped with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor.

However, it appears Samsung and Qualcomm haven’t quite managed to match the speed of the Apple iPhone 13. In fact, the latest Geekbench 5 tests show that the iPhone 13 Pro Max is 30% faster than the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

Efficiency and Thermals

It appears the Samsung Galaxy S22 is let down by the subpar power efficiency and thermal performance compared to the iPhone 13.

Under heavy load, the phone quickly turns hot. As a result, the processor appears to significantly throttle to prevent overheating.

It’s not clear if this is a hardware issue with the Snapdrgon 8 Gen 1, or rather a software issue on Samsung’s side.

Qualcomm have been under increasing pressure to match the performance of Apple’s A15 Bionic processor, which boasts some of the highest benchmarks ever seen in a consumer smartphone.

Regardless, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is still an improvement over last year’s Snapdragon 888 as used in the Galaxy S21, and Samsung still manages to hold the throne for the fastest Android phone.

The European models of the Galaxy S22 will use Samsung’s proprietary Exynos 2200 CPU instead of Qualcomm’s offering. We expect performance to be similar between the two chips, with negligible differences in real world usage.

With the upcoming Apple iPhone 14 expected to be announced in September, Apple will surely leap even further ahead with their next A16 chip. At this rate, it may take several years and significant investment from Samsung to at least be on par with Apple's chip performance.

However, we still consider the Samsung Galaxy S22 to be one of the best phones you can buy right now.
