The new iPhone SE (2022), also known as the iPhone SE 3 or iPhone SE 3rd generation, has finally arrived. Although it looks the same as its predecessor, a lot has changed under the hood.
This will be the first in the series to have 5G connectivity, for blazingly fast download and upload speeds. You'll be able to stream all the latest movies and TV shows at the highest 4K resolution without any delays.
With the blazingly fast A15 chip, performance will be top of the line, competing against flagship phones. This is the same chip as used with the iPhone 13 series, which is currently the fastest phone on the market.
Despite the budget price and dated looks, the iPhone SE (2022) will be a phone that will last years, thanks to the latest technology and Apple's longlife iOS support.
Design
The design of the iPhone SE (2022) remains unchanged. Those who wanted a complete redesign will have to wait for another generation.
On the front, Apple has kept the familiar Home / Touch ID button with inbuilt fingerprint sensor. The bezels around the 4.7 inch display remain relatively large, especially when compared to modern phone designs.
Apple is using the same glass for the front and back as used with the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro, which they claim is ‘toughest glass in a smartphone’.
The iPhone SE (2022) has the same IP67 rating, which offers dust and water resistance up to 1.5m for 30 minutes.
The iPhone SE (2022) weighs 144g, with dimensions of 138.4mm x 67.3mm x 7.3mm.
Display
The display is a 4.7 inch IPS LCD panel. Unfortunately, the panel has not been upgraded to OLED technology, however thanks to Apple’s previous experience with IPS LCD displays, colours should still be vibrant and bright.
The body to screen ratio is a staggeringly high 65.4%. The large bezels around the display are quite a distraction, and are almost unheard of today - even with budget smartphones.
Thankfully, with a 750 x 1334 resolution, the display should be crisp and sharp, with a respectable 326 ppi.
Performance
The Apple iPhone SE (2022) is powered by Apple’s latest A15 Bionic chip, which is the same speedy processor as used with the iPhone 13 series.
This makes the iPhone SE (2022) the fastest and most powerful budget phone on the market today. The hexa-core chip blows the competition out of the water, and even beats flagship Android phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S22.
With 3GB RAM, it doesn’t have the most amount of memory, however iOS is well known for being very memory efficient.
As for storage, there are 64GB, 128GB and 256GB variants.
Camera
On the rear, there is a single 12 MP f/1.8 wide camera, which is the same module as used with the previous iPhone SE.
However, with the new A15 Bionic chip, Apple claims the camera quality has actually improved thanks to their Deep Fusion technology, which uses AI and machine learning capabilities for advanced image processing. Furthermore, there’s now Smart HDR 4 and new Photographic Styles to choose from.
Operating system
The iPhone SE (2022) ships with the latest iOS 15.3. As with most Apple devices, there will be at least 5 years of major iOS updates, ensuring you will always have the latest features and app compatibility.
Battery life
Despite added 5G connectivity, battery life has actually improved from the previous iPhone SE. This is partly due to Apple’s extremely power efficient A15 chip, coupled with software optimisations from iOS 15.
The battery can be charged to 50% within 30 minutes with 20W fast charging technology. However, there won’t be a charger in the box, and you’ll have to use your existing adaptor or buy a new one.
Qi wireless charging is available, however there is no MagSafe support this time around.
Colours
The iPhone SE (2022) is available in three colours:
- Midnight
- Starlight
- (PRODUCT)RED
