The Sony Xperia 1 IV is yet to be unofficially unveiled, but thanks to various leaks, we already know what to expect from the upcoming flagship phone from Sony.

Newly leaked renders show the Sony Xperia 1 IV in full detail, sporting a very familiar design. The front of the phone is identical to the Sony Xperia 1 III, with a boxy, notcheless design and minimal bezels.

The rear of the phone has a slightly different design, with sharp edges that ever so slightly slant towards the sides. This design trend has become increasingly popular in recent years, and looks similar to the Apple iPhone 13.

On the side, there’s a physical fingerprint sensor. It’s a shame Sony isn’t experimenting with under-display technology, however we understand some people actually prefer a side fingerprint sensor, and has become a distinct feature of Sony's flagship phones.

As for physical dimensions, the phone will roughly be the same size at 164.7mm x 70.8mm x 8.3mm.

Sony will be keeping the ultrawide 6.5 inch display with 21:9 aspect ratio. The display will be a 4K 120 Hz OLED panel with 1644 x 3840 pixels. With 643 pixels per inch, the Sony Xperia 1 IV will have one of the sharpest displays on the market when it’s released.

The cameras will be upgraded from triple 12 MP cameras to a 50 MP wide camera, 48 MP telephoto camera and 12 MP ultrawide camera. Despite the increase in resolution, the additional pixels will mainly be used towards 8K video capabilities, with pixel binning technology that will still output 12 MP photos from the main camera. The front will still feature an 8MP camera, but will use Sony’s own module instead of the previous Samsung sensor.

Sony will be using the latest flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip, as used with the Samsung Galaxy S22. Storage will come in either 256GB and 512GB, with 12GB and 16GB memory variants. The battery will be increased from 4500mAh to 5000mAh, with 45W fast charging.

Sony appear to be sticking with a 3.5mm headphone jack at the top of the phone - a popular feature for audiophile enthusiasts.

We expect the Sony Xperia I IV to launch in May 2022 at around £1,199.00 - the same price as the Sony Xperia 1 III.
