Samsung to drop Z branding from Galaxy Fold3 and Galaxy Flip3 models due to pro-war association

The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has resulted in unexpected consequences for the letter Z, and has become a symbol for the pro-war movement in Russia.

Therefore, it comes as no surprise that Samsung want to distance themselves from such a symbol as far as they possibly can. Although the unfortunate Z branding in the Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Flip series was conceived long before the war in 2019, its new association will prove difficult to shake off.

Starting in Baltic countries, Samsung have renamed their foldable devices online to simply Samsung Galaxy Fold3 and Samsung Galaxy Flip3. Newly released images also show Samsung dropped the Z branding from their packaging, although they haven’t gone as far as to recall existing stock.

So far, the updated name changes have only taken effect in Eastern Europe, however we expect Samsung to update and unify the name changes across global markets soon.

Although we understand the Z was meant to represent a folding mechanism, in our opinion the Z branding was completely unnecessary in the first place, and was often ignored in general conversation. Furthermore, the full model names were quite a mouthful - Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 - that’s a whole 8 syllables! And while we're at it, was the space removal really necessary? Fold3 vs Fold 3. Samsung, if you’re reading this, please don't fire your marketing department as times are difficult right now, however I suggest having a very stern conversation with them.
