Samsung announces the Samsung Galaxy A13

Samsung have announced their latest 4G budget phone with the Samsung Galaxy A13, a follow up to the Samsung Galaxy A12. The phone will have quite a few changes compared to the current Samsung Galaxy A13 5G, which is fairly confusing given the same A13 branding.

The Galaxy A13 will feature a large 6.6 inch TFT 60 Hz display, with 1080 x 2408 pixels for a 400 pixel per inch density. Bezels will be fairly minimal, with a 83% body to screen ratio. As for protection, the panel will have a Gorilla Glass 5 coating.

The phone will weigh 195g, with dimensions of 165.1mm x 76.4mm x 8.8mm.

The processor will be Samsung’s own Exynos 850 chip, which is a low to mid-range octa-core chip running at 2.2 GHz. There will be 3 different storage options - unusually, each will have a different amount of memory.

  • 32GB storage, 3GB RAM
  • 64GB storage, 4GB RAM
  • 128GB storage, 6GB RAM

The range of options is certainly a welcome one, and makes sense given the budget price point. There will also be a microSD card slot, for additional storage. As microSD cards are generally cheap, it will make sense for some people to buy the cheapest 32GB model and expand the storage with a cheap microSD card, as opposed to buying the more expensive 64GB or 128GB models - saving money as a result.

Despite the budget price point, Samsung are being very generous with a quad camera array. On the rear, there will be a 50 MP f/1.8 wide camera, 5 MP f/2.2 ultrawide camera, 2 MP f/2.4 macro camera and 2 MP f/2.4 depth camera. For comparison, the flagship Samsung Galaxy S22 only have 3 cameras. The front will feature an 8 MP f/2.2 wide selfie camera. Both the selfie and rear cameras will be able to record video at 1080p 30fps. As with most phone cameras, the magic happens with the image post-processing. The Exynos 850 chip is not well known for its imaging capabilities, so we'll have to wait to initial reviews to see whether the chip can keep up with the large quad cameras.

As a demanded feature for cheap phones, Samsung will be keeping with 3.5mm headphone jack, but will also have a USB C port for flexibility.

There’s a large 5000mAh battery, which can be charged at 25W. There’s no charger in the box, meaning you’ll have to buy a separate charger. Any USB C charger will work, however if you want fast charging, you’ll have to make sure it supports at least 25W speeds.

There’s also a fingerprint sensor, which is rare for a phone at this price. However, you won’t get the latest under-display tech, and instead the fingerprint sensor will be on the side of the phone.

The Samsung Galaxy A13 will start from £149.99, and will come in black, blue, peach or white. The phone will run Android 12, with Samsung One UI 4.1. Samsung also announced the similar Samsung Galaxy A23, which should be priced around the same.
