Following months of leaks and teases 216, Oppo have finally announced their flagship phone, the Oppo Find X5 Pro. Skipping the number 4, the Oppo Find X5 Pro is a follow up to last year’s powerful Oppo Find X3 Pro, introducing a number of upgrades.

The design is rather familiar, but with a few tweaks and changes. The front of the phone is almost identical, with the same curved screen that wraps around the side of the phone, with tiny bezels at the top and bottom. The pinhole cutout for the selfie camera remains at the same position at the top left.

The display has been upgraded from LTPO AMOLED to the next generation LTPO2 AMOLED technology, which Oppo claims is slightly more vibrant and colourful. As for protection, Gorilla Glass 5 has been replaced with the superior Gorilla Glass Victus.

Apart from these two minor changes, the display is identical, featuring a 6.7 inch panel with 1billion colours, 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ technology, 1440 x 3216 pixels with 525 pixel per inch density and 89.6% body to screen ratio.

The rear of the Oppo Find X5 Pro is where the biggest design change appears. The back panel is now entirely ceramic, with a disproportionate, bubble shaped camera bump that blends in with the flat surface. The back still looks very reflective, except the ceramic appears less like a liquid metallic surface, and rather gives off a more premium and subtle reflective appearance. The Oppo Find X5 Pro will come in Ceramic White and Glaze Black.

Furthermore, the cameras remain largely identical. Both the wide and ultrawide camera will use the same 50 MP IMX766 sensor. However, the wide camera now has a faster lens at f/1.7 compared to f/1.8, and also features 5 axis optical image stabilisation with 3 axis sensor shift and 2 axis lens OIS, which Oppo claims can deliver SLR-like image stabilisation.

The telephoto camera is also the same 13 MP sensor. Oppo have decided to drop the 0.3 MP microscope camera, for a total of 3 rear cameras. We don’t think many people will miss the microscopic camera - although it performed well, it was largely a gimmick and was probably only used once or twice then forgotten about. As for the selfie camera, it also remains the same, with a 32 MP sensor.

MariSilicon X

The most exciting addition to the Find X5 Pro is Oppo’s own proprietary MariSilicon X NPU, specifically designed for image processing. Oppo claims the AI powered, 6nm process chip with 18TOPS can deliver huge improvements for images in low light, particularly with video recording with the HDR 4K Ultra Night Video shooting mode. By offloading the workload from the main processor, Oppo claims the MariSilicon X chip can independently process 8 trillion operations per second, for faster image processing with improved quality output.

The UK and global version of the Oppo Find X5 Pro will use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, which is the same chip as used with the Samsung Galaxy S22. Unfortunately, it won’t come with the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus chip, which is said to alleviate many of the thermal and power efficiency problems with Qualcomm’s flagship CPU. For the Chinese market, the processor will instead use the MediaTek Dimensity 9000.

The Oppo Find X5 Pro will come in 3 different storage and memory variants:

  • 256GB storage and 8GB memory
  • 256GB storage and 12GB memory
  • 512GB storage and 12GB memory

The battery capacity has been increased by 10%, from 4500mAh to 5000mAh. Oppo will be introducing their 80W SuperVOOC technology, which claims to charge the Oppo Find X5 Pro from 0% to 50% within 12 minutes. However, you must use the included SuperVOOC charger, which is thankfully included in the box. With fast 50W wireless charging, you can charge the phone from 0% to 100% within 47 minutes. There’s also 10W reverse wireless charging, allowing you to charge your other devices by placing them on top of the Oppo Find X5 Pro.

The Oppo Find X5 will ship with ColorOS 12.1, which is the latest Android 12 operating system from Google.

An IP68 rating remains, for dust resistance and water resistance up to 1.5m for 30 minutes.

Oppo have also announced the smaller Oppo Find X5 and budget friendly Oppo Find X5 Lite. All three phones can be pre-ordered from 10th March, and will be available in store from 24th March.

  • Oppo Find X5 Pro - £1,049
  • Oppo Find X5 - £749
  • Oppo Find X5 Lite - £419
