Best networks for international roaming (2021)

By Adrian Vincent 17 Aug 2021, 18:59 Best networks for international roaming (2021)

If you’re a frequent traveller, you will want to pick a network that allows you to use your allowance abroad in as many countries as possible, all at the cheapest price.

With international roaming, you are able to use your network and phone in another country.

Depending on your plan and the country you are visiting, you may be able to use your regular allowance. If not, you will be charged at an out of allowance rate.

Your network may allow you to use your regular allowance free of charge or at an additional cost. Not all countries will be included, and some countries may cost more than others.

If you’re roaming in another country and your network does not allow you to use your regular allowance, they will charge a premium rate with out of tariff charges. These charges are generally expensive, and can add up quickly.

By law, the most a network can charge you when roaming internationally is £45 per month (£54 inc VAT). You can choose to opt out of this by buying an additional add-on or pass, or by contacting your network.

Except for EE and Vodafone, all networks still offer free EU roaming. Some networks even allow free roaming in additional countries outside the EU.

Free EU roaming

With free EU roaming, you can use your regular allowance within EU countries, at no additional charge.

Since Brexit, it is no longer a legal obligation for networks to offer this service for free.

However, only EE and Vodafone have decided to charge customers, starting from January 2022.

Currently, all other UK networks do not have plans to charge for EU roaming, but this may change in the future.

For outside of the EU, you can get 500MB data per day with a Travel Data Pass.

If you don’t have a Travel Data Pass or you’re in a country that is not included, you will be charged an out of tariff rate, which varies per country. See BT Mobile tariff charges for more information.

Is roaming outside the EU expensive?

You may be able to roam outside the EU and use your data for free or at a small cost, depending on your network and plan.

If the country you are visiting is not covered by a pass provided by your network, or you go over your allowance, you will be charged at an out of tariff rate.
