Can I get unlimited data with a Three SIM?
Yes, unlimited data deals are available on 1 month, 12 month and 24 month contracts.
There's no fair usage policy when using data within the UK, however when roaming you cannot use more than 12GB per month.
Can I use my Three SIM abroad?
You can roam in most countries with a Three SIM.
From 23rd May 2022, roaming in Europe will no longer be free. Instead, you will have to pay £2 per day, which will automatically be charged when you visit a European country. Customers who signed up for a contract before October 2021 will still be eligible for free European roaming, as long as they have not upgraded since.
For select countries outside Europe, you can get Go Roam for £5 per day, which allows you to use your allowance in 73 worldwide destinations.
For all other countries, you will be charged at a separate out of plan rate.
For a full list of destinations and more details, see Three roaming.
Can I get 5G with a Three SIM?
Yes, 5G is available for all Three customers at no additional cost. If you’re using a Three SIM, you’ll need a 5G phone in order to receive a 5G signal.
Three originally launched their 5G network in August 2021, and claim to have 50 Mhz more spectrum compared to other UK networks, for a total of 140 Mhz. They also claim to be the fastest 5G network, with independent tests carried out by Ookla.
Three is investing over £2bn into their 5G infrastructure, by adding new 5G phone masts and converting existing equipment to support the 5G spectrum.
Currently, Three has 5G in over 300 locations, which can reach 29% outdoor coverage. They plan to reach over 2,500 locations within the following years.

Can I get a Three SIM if I have a bad credit rating?
It depends on the contract length and how low credit rating is. Most people with a bad credit rating are likely to get a 1 month rolling SIM contract with Three, however you may find difficulty in being accepted for a 12 month or 24 month contract.
Three 1 month SIMs
If you don’t want to be tied to a long contract, Three offer 1 month rolling SIM contracts.
All Three 1 month SIMs come with unlimited minutes and texts, with data ranging from 4GB to unlimited.
You can cancel a Three 1 month SIM at any time you want. You can also change your plan to a lower or higher cost tariff whenever you like.
Do I need to unlock my phone to use a Three SIM?
If you bought your phone from Three, or it originally came with a Three SIM, then you shouldn’t need to unlock your phone in order to use a Three SIM.
Since December 2021, it is illegal for any network to sell a mobile phone that is locked to a specific network.
If you bought your phone before this date, it may be locked to your current network. If you’re unsure if your phone is unlocked, simply insert a SIM from a different network - if your phone is locked, an error message will be shown.
All providers must unlock your phone for free. You will need to contact your current network to do this. They will ask for your IMEI number, which you can obtain by dialing *#06# from your phone.
What size SIM cards can I get with Three?
Three offers all SIM cards sizes, and are currently trialing eSIMs. You will be sent a standard SIM card size, which will have cutouts to be broken down to a micro SIM or nano SIM. eSIMs with Three are not widely available, and are in a trial phase with select customers.
-
Standard - the largest SIM card size, which is generally used with older non-smartphones. Newer phones are likely to use micro or nano SIMs.
-
Micro - Once considered a smaller replacement for standard SIMs, micro SIMs are less prevalent today, being replaced by the even smaller nano SIM. Older smartphones or budget phones may still use a micro SIM.
-
Nano - The smallest and most common SIM card size used in phones sold today. Used by the newer iPhones and Samsungs.
-
eSIM - A digital SIM card. eSIMs are still a new technology, and are not commonly used in the UK right now. Three are currently trialing eSIM technology for compatible phones such as the Apple iPhone 14. Three have not announced when eSIMs will be generally available.
Can I switch from my current network to a Three SIM?
Yes, it’s easy to switch to Three. From your current network, text PAC to 65075 for free. You will receive a reply text within 5 minutes, which will contain your PAC code.
You will need to give this PAC code to Three. You can do this at the time of purchase, or by contacting Three after you have received your Three SIM card.
After you have given your PAC code to Three, they will begin the switch or your behalf, which normally takes 3 working days. Once the switch has completed, you will lose signal with your current network. When this happens, you can insert your Three SIM to complete the switching process.
For more information, see transferring your phone number to a new network.
Does Three have good coverage?
Three has very good coverage. As the 4th largest network in the UK, they are able to deliver 4G to 99.9% of the population. With 140MHz 5G spectrum, Three claim they are the fastest 5G network, with tests independently carried out by Ookla.
As the name might suggest, Three originally started as the UK’s first 3G network - a claim which they still hold to this day. However, as 3G becomes more obsolete, Three have been upgrading their existing infacturutre and phone masts to support 4G and 5G connectivity.
You can check the signal strength you will receive from your location by entering your postcode into the Three coverage checker tool. You will also be able to see a breakdown of each spectrum, with information about 3G, 4G and 5G.
Is Three a fast network?
In a recent independent test by Opensignal, Three is the second fastest network in the UK, only beaten by EE.
Average download speeds were 25.2 Mbps, with upload speeds of 6.3 Mbps. As for 5G, they also came in second place, with average download speeds of 80.2 Mbps and upload speeds of 9.8 Mbps.
According to Ookla, their late 2021 Speedtest Intelligence tests showed Three to be the fastest 5G network, with median download speeds of 258.80 Mbps and median upload speeds of 13.94 Mbps. The majority of tests were carried out in London, Birmingham and Manchester.
How reliable is Three?
Despite being the smallest major UK network, Three deliver a very reliable service, with minimal downtime when compared to the other major networks.
In mid February 2022, Three suffered from a network outage across the UK, with particular disruption in London. Customers were unable to make calls and texts, with some left without internet. However, normal service was resumed by the end of the day.
Apart from the unavoidable minor disruptions, Three has not had any major downtime in recent years.
Does Three have good customer service?
Three has fairly good customer service, with help available over the phone, online via webchat and from their physical stores.
90% of Three’s call centres are located within India (Mumbai and Pune), with the remaining in Scotland (Glasgow).
Three’s call centres are open 7 days a week, from 8am to 8pm on weekdays and 9am to 8pm on weekends. Calling Three is free, however calling from abroad may incur charges.
- From a Three phone: 333
- From any other phone: 0333 338 1001

Help is also available through the Three app on Android and iOS, where you can view your account status and billing information.
You can find your nearest store by entering your postcode into the Three storage locator.
In Ofcom’s recent pay monthly mobile complaints data for July 2021 to September 2021, Three received an average of 3 complaints per 100,000 customers. This is slightly higher than the average of 2 complaints.
